Different Energy Sources

Published

on

We require a variety of energy sources to work and live. Solar, wind, geothermal and biomass are among the sources. These sources aren’t only major sources of electricity, but can also be used for heating and transport. The main challenge with these sources of energy is that they can cause greenhouse gas emissions when used to generate electricity. This is why there is a need for more green energy sources.

Fossil fuels are the most popular form of energy. They include coal, oil and natural gas. They formed millions of years ago when prehistoric plants and animals died and were buried by layers of sedimentary rock. Under the right conditions, these fossil fuels were gradually transformed into carbon-rich substances which, when burned create energy. These fossil fuels are non-renewable because they will run out in our lifetimes or even in many lives.

Renewable energy sources On the other hand are continuously replenished. The most important renewable energy source is sunlight, which gives warmth and light. It is used to power our homes and businesses and to drive cars. Wind is another renewable energy source, which generates electricity through spinning turbines. Since the first time people realized how to harness wind we have been utilizing it for millennia. In addition, we employ biological processes to make ethanol (a clear alcohol that can be used as a fuel) from waste and crops.

Hydropower is the largest renewable energy source in America, however biofuels and wind are likely to surpass it. Hydropower makes use of the natural water cycle to harness water’s rapid flow, which is used to produce electricity.
